Have I mentioned what a kick I get out of my brother-in-law?? The whole family gathered at the folks last night for dinner because Kenny was leaving really early this morning and Pop’s sister and niece were in town to visit. Full on ham dinner with ham gravy and all the fixins.
Before dinner last night I was talking to Kenny and he was giving me hell about this blog. He thought I shared too much. I explained that when times were tough, I found journaling on my blog cathartic…and then there is the entertainment value…I can usually usually find something funny in just about anything and love to share it…even if the entertainment comes from me doing something stupid.
Speaking of entertainment value…I was reminded of some funny stories while Kenny was here. Kenny was kind enough to come over and help me get some cosmetic chores around the house done. It was stuff I didn’t know how to do that he excels at. While he worked I entertained him with some of the stories I’ve collected over my 40 years.
I think my favorite was about my buddy, whom I will call H. H and I went to high school together and he loved to say things for the pure shock value. He was known for the standing on the outside of a group of talking girls and when there was a break in the discussion he would pop in with…”But what I really want to know is…” and he would ask some socially unacceptable question. Kenny laughed out loud and that phrase became the running joke while he was here.
I also taught him a new figure of speech which I’m sure he will be using from here on out. We were talking about redheads and how I hated being one when I was a kid. Redheads are subject to ridicule because there are so few of us as kids. It’s not until much later that you realize that so many of the redheads out there are dyed redheads. As a teen and young adult some guys would make it clear they’d always wanted to “get with” a real redhead then there would be the usual comment about there being only one way to verify a “true” redhead. So my usual response was, “Yes, the carpet and the drapes match.” Apparently Kenny had never heard that one. He was still chuckling about it much later.
So now I will probably hear from him about what I’ve shared here…Oh well, he’ll get used to it.
