That was the name of the workshop I went to in Laguna Beach.
But first, let me say, Laguna Beach ain’t all it was cracked up to be! Can you say “CROWDED”? I knew you could. I don’t ever recall seeing traffic like that! And the Hotel? Ugh! $200/night for a hotel room that was about the size of a crackerbox! Seriously…it was probably 13′x9′. Big enough for a double bed and room to walk on either side of it. In front of the double bed was an armoire where the TV was. Then there was the issue of parking! The hotel probably had 100+ rooms and parking spaces for less than half of that. Once you found a parking spot…you didn’t dare take your car out again!
OK, done bitching about the hotel. Poor Skye, none of my bitching is meant as a reflection of her or her workshop!!! It was just a caveat that if you ever want to stay in Laguna, Good Luck!
Back to the workshop…it was GREAT! Skye was so cool and down to earth! So willing to share all she’s learned. I’ve learned there are two kinds of professionals in the world…those that wouldn’t help you if their life depended on it for fear that you might take some of their business away. And those that are more than happy to help and mentor knowing that there is plenty of work to go around, that and Universal Law of “What Goes Around, Comes Around”, better to have good stuff coming back around!
I was turned on to Skye’s work a few years ago, can’t remember from where, but I’ve always loved her work! Check it out here : http://www.workofheartphoto.com/ . Part of the workshop was about finding unusual locations to shoot but also shooting some child models with her. Our unusual location was the alleyside of a restaurant that had a pretty painted wood fence and a building with an ivy covering. It taught me you never know where you might find a nice photography location. (Which reminds me, I really need to take a drive around and find some places close that would also be effective.)
So there are these darling little girls who are serving as our models and as soon as Skye starts shooting, the rest of us photographers start clamoring around to take pictures, myself included. Then it dawns on me…D’oh! I’m more interested in seeing how she works!!!! So I back way the heck off and start taking shots of Skye shooting our models.
The weekend, though exhausting, really recharged my creative batteries. I came out of there with a lot of plans and ideas. It was a good thing!
