I don’t know what it is about North Dakota, but man, they have some mutant, alien version of mosquitos!
First, they do not seem to be effected, eg “turned off”, by insecticides! I’ve worn “OFF” and “Cutter” brand personal insecticides and have still gotten eaten alive! I’ve even reapplied, like you are supposed to do with sunscreen, only to come into the house with more bites than I left with.
Second, NoDak mosquitos, while normal in size, produce HUGE welts of “itchy-ness” on your skin. I was beginning to think that it was just me and that maybe there may be some sort of allergy factor to their bites…but everyone seems to have these HUGE welts, and by HUGE I mean the size of a quarter! My legs are so covered in these welts that I couldn’t get my boots on due to the current size of my ankles, or rather, cankles.
Many people choose to deal with the problem of mosquitos and other flying creatures by using bug zappers. This adds the aroma of “Bug Barbeque” to the air and can be a bit of a turn off, however the knowledge that there are now less mosquitos in your general vicinity and the World can be a bit of a redeeming factor.
In closing, I would just like to say that mosquitos SUCK! Especially when you normally live in a climate that is not really conducive to their existence! And the ones in North Dakota REALLY FRICKIN SUCK, literally, leaving behind an itchy, crusty mess that WILL keep you up at night.
