The Importance of Cultivation

I’m in a mood to wax philosophic…is that even a word? Or maybe it should be metaphoric??  Either way, this post will have a point…I promise.

I think it’s safe to say that we all know the importance of cultivation when planting a garden.  We prepare the land we are going to plant…turn up the soil, remove weeds, and probably fertilize before the first seed ever touches the Earth.  Then the gardener plant the seed and waters it.  Here is the most important part…the regular care and cultivation of that garden to produce the flower, fruit or vegetable you are hoping for.

We don’t only cultivate gardens, we cultivate relationships.  Todays big discussion surrounds marriage.  It’s not enough  to assume your significant other knows you love them and knows how you feel about them.  Just like the gardener…he knows he planted seeds in a patch of earth…but if he doesn’t water the seeds, and pull the weeds, what is the likelihood that the seeds will bear fruit?

Brian, whom I love dearly and who is a wonderful husband in most ways, is not the best at expressing his love for me…for some reason he has no problem expressing it to our son, thankfully.  I wonder why that is? I think in his mind he assumes I know how he feels…and rightly so, I guess, deep down, I do know he loves me.  But that doesn’t change the fact that I need the occasional reassurances, be it a holding of my hand, snuggling up next to me on the couch for a movie, or a phone call just to say “Hey, I was thinking of you.”

I think it’s easy to assume that the person you spend your life with knows how you feel…but it never hurts to do a little something to reassure them…at the very least you will probably make their day.
